M♥️NSTER magazine FAQ
What is the M♥️NSTER magazine?
M♥NSTER is a quarterly monster romance magazine which focuses on romance and sexual encounters involving one or more “monstrous” nonhuman/paranormal beings (such as vampires, werewolves, dragons, aliens, robots, and so on).
Currently we offer a free-to-download, digital-only publication, but this may change in the future depending on audience interest.
Where can I read past editions of M♥️NSTER?
Our masterlist of past issues is right here.
What kinds of content does M♥️NSTER accept?
M♥NSTER accepts both fiction and artwork centered around the theme of monster romance, as described above. We accept all genres — science fiction, fantasy, horror, and even historical fiction are all good so long as the submission focuses on the relationship involving the nonhuman character. We accept both fanworks and original content, SFW and NSFW content, and content that has been previously shared elsewhere.
Writers! Most of the short stories we accept run anywhere from 300 to 3,000 words in length. We are also willing to work with serial fiction that is published in installments over a series of different editions. Failure to properly fill out the form including failure to mention triggering content (like assault) can result in your immediate disqualification.
Artists! M♥NSTER accepts both standalone artwork and standalone or serial comics. Comic submissions are a maximum of 8 pages per comic per edition. We now only accept digital art in A4 spread page (2894x4093) or letter size format.
What kinds of content does M♥️NSTER NOT accept?
Although pro-kink, M♥NSTER does not accept any kind of content that:
- Depicts suicide
- Depicts bestiality
- Depicts characters under the age of 18 in sexual situations
- Promotes queerphobia, ableism, racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, or white supremacy
- Promotes real-world violence
I’m a minor. Can I submit to M♥️NSTER?
Because M♥NSTER features sexually explicit content, we only accept creative work from those who are 18 years of age or older.
Are there themes?
Yes! Our theme schedule is as follows:
January - Winter Edition
April - Spring Edition
July - Summer Edition
October - Fall Edition
What do the themes mean?
Each of the themes are seasonal and reflect the motifs of their seasons. This can include holidays, but also more broadly atmosphere and setting. Some examples of what might qualify for the themes include:
Winter: New Years, Hanukkah, the snowed in trope, abominable snow monster, fluffy hot coco fics
Spring: Easter, Holi, May Day, rain storms, flower monsters, rebirth
Summer: Pride month, the summer solstice, the beach, Summer break
Fall: Halloween, Oktoberfest, headless horseman, falling leaves, pumpkin carving
Does my submission have to follow the theme?
No, but submissions that meet the theme will take priority if we have to be selective and they will be highlighted and specially marked! Artwork that meets the theme will be chosen for the cover whenever possible.
How does the submission process work?
You’ll want to access and fill out the appropriate Google Form from the links below, which will guide you through the first step of the submission process.
Writers! M♥NSTER accepts written submissions as both .docx files and Google documents, or you can copy/paste the text of your story into the appropriate field in the Google form linked above. Failure to properly fill out the form including failure to mention triggering content (like sexual assault) can result in your immediate disqualification.
Artists! Our preferred file format for images is PNG, and our preferred color profile is RGB (which is better suited for screen viewing than CMYK). Currently, as we are a digital-only publication, we can be very flexible and do not have any rules regarding canvas sizes—however, if your artwork is traditional rather than digital, please scan your work prior to submission; we do not accept photos of your work! We now only accept digital art in A4 spread page (2894x4093) or letter size format.
Submissions close on the last day of the month, and you will receive word of whether or not your work has been accepted on the 1st or 2nd day of the following month. Over the next week or so, depending on your preferences, you will receive feedback on your submission and have the opportunity to make edits and revisions. Your submission needs to be finalized on the 7th. The edition that your submission will be featured in will be released on the 10th day of the month after our editors finish the layout. Late submissions will roll over to the next issue.
M♥NSTER attempts to create a diverse range of monster-focused content in each edition; if we have 8 werewolf submissions, for example, we can’t publish all of them in one edition and will need to space them out over several different monthly editions. If your submission isn’t accepted one month, you are welcome to re-submit the following month.
Do contributors to M♥️NSTER still own their work?
Yes! If you submit artwork or creative writing to M♥NSTER, you retain full ownership over your work for all time. If you later decide to publish elsewhere and the publisher demands sole publication rights, we can remove your work from M♥NSTER.
Does M♥️NSTER offer payment to contributors?
Unfortunately, due to budget constraints and the fact that M♥NSTER is a free-to-download magazine, we cannot offer monetary compensation to contributors at this time.
I want to help out! Can I donate to M♥️NSTER?
Unfortunately, at the current time we do not accept monetary donations from readers or contributors. However, your interest in doing so warms our hearts.
I want to help out! Can I become an editor for M♥️NSTER?
Yes! We are currently looking for additional editors. In particular, we’re looking for a social media manager to potentially expand beyond our Tumblr roots, into Twitter and Instagram. If you are interested, please email us at monsterheartmag@gmail.com
